The South African Football Association (SAFA) has vowed to track down and punish fans who abused Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane on Saturday afternoon.

The fans abused Mosimane at Lucas Moripe Stadium where Mosimane led Al Ahly to a one-all draw with his former club, Mamelodi Sundowns.

In a statement, SAFA CEO, Advocate Tebogo Motlanthe, vowed to bring the culprits to book.

These individuals have not only humiliated coach Pitso Mosimane, they have brought the name of the country into disrepute and, as SAFA, we will leave no stone unturned in identifying these individuals and hand out harshest of penalty to the perpetrators,” Motlanthe said.

The fans hoisted insulting placards directed at Mosimane while chanting.

SAFA condemned the supporters and has since hinted that the police would investigate the incident.

We have requested for an urgent report from the security and police at the stadium and we will also await report from the club. We are treating this matter with the urgency and seriousness it deserves. We cannot tolerate this; Mosimane is our proud ambassador and what these people did needs to be condemned by all civilised society,” Motlanthe said.

After the game, Mosimane said he was hurt by the abuse some of which targeted his mother.

Al Ahly progressed to the Champions League semi-finals 3-1 on aggregate having won the first leg 2-0.

Sundowns have since issued a press release apologising to Al Ahly but fell short of acknowledging that Mosimane was the ultimate target.

Mosimane told the press that he knows an official who is behind the abuse at Sundowns saying they were not happy that he left to join the Cairo giants.
