Ghanaian football icon Asamoah Gyan has thrown his full support behind the African Schools Championship, calling it a “great opportunity” for the continent’s next generation of footballers. The former Black Stars captain, known for his passion for developing young talent, sees the tournament as a crucial step toward unearthing future stars and strengthening national teams across Africa.
“It’s a great opportunity for this generation to benefit from it. The other national teams are going to benefit from it,” Gyan said. “For me personally, I support grassroots football. So, being an ambassador, we are going to do everything to make sure we produce the stars.”
The African Schools Championship, backed by CAF and its partners, aims to promote football development from the grassroots by giving young boys and girls across the continent a structured platform to showcase their talent. It also promotes education, discipline, and community through sport.
Gyan, who remains Ghana’s all-time leading goalscorer and a continental legend, has long been a vocal advocate for youth football and talent development. His appointment as an ambassador for the competition signals his dedication to helping build a solid foundation for Africa’s footballing future.
With many of Africa’s biggest footballing exports rising from humble beginnings, Gyan believes initiatives like this championship could be the spark that launches the careers of tomorrow’s superstars.
“It’s not just about football—it’s about giving young people purpose, hope, and a chance to dream,” he added.
