2026 FIFA WORLD CUP: Bosnia Beat Qatar 3-1 to Keep World Cup Dream Alive

Bosnia and Herzegovina kept their FIFA World Cup hopes alive with a commanding 3-1 victory over Qatar, producing a clinical display that secured their place among the tournament’s best third-placed teams as they await confirmation of a spot in the Round of 32.

After a balanced opening period, Bosnia struck twice in the space of five devastating minutes to seize complete control of the contest.

The breakthrough arrived in the 29th minute when Karim-Sam Alajbegovic found the back of the net, calmly finishing to hand Bosnia a deserved lead.

Just five minutes later, the Europeans doubled their advantage in fortunate fashion. Veteran striker Edin Džeko met a beautifully whipped cross into the penalty area with a powerful effort that forced an unfortunate own goal from Hussain Al-Brake, leaving Qatar stunned at 2-0.

Bosnia nearly put the contest beyond doubt in the 38th minute when Džeko was inches away from adding his name to the scoresheet, only to see his powerful strike cannon off the goalpost.

Qatar, however, refused to surrender. In the 41st minute, Khalid Al-Haydos breathed life back into the contest, finishing clinically to reduce the deficit to 2-1 before halftime and set up an intriguing second period.

Following the restart, both sides attacked relentlessly in an entertaining second half. Bosnia searched for the goal that would restore their two-goal cushion, while Qatar pressed hard for an equaliser, creating several promising opportunities in an end-to-end encounter.

The decisive moment finally arrived in the 80th minute. From a scrambling situation inside the Qatari penalty area, Mahmić reacted quickest to poke the loose ball into the net, restoring Bosnia’s two-goal advantage and effectively ending Qatar’s resistance.

The 3-1 victory sees Bosnia finish with three crucial points and move into the pool of the tournament’s best third-placed teams. They must now await the conclusion of the remaining group matches to discover whether their impressive victory has earned them a place in the Round of 32.
