Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz has announced his decision to step down as head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars, bringing an end to his short-term spell in charge of the national team.
Queiroz, who was appointed on a four-month contract to lead Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has opted not to renew his deal with the Ghana Football Association, citing personal reasons for his departure.
The experienced tactician was brought in to guide the Black Stars through their World Cup campaign, where he oversaw the team’s progress before their elimination from the tournament.
In a farewell statement, Queiroz stressed that Ghana’s future success will depend on more than performances on the pitch, calling for improvements in the structures that support the national team.
“The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch. Black Stars success must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent.”
His remarks underline the importance of long-term planning, player development, and creating a professional environment capable of sustaining success at the highest level.
The Ghana Football Association is now expected to begin the search for a new head coach as preparations for the Black Stars’ next assignments get underway.
