2026 FIFA WORLD CUP: Christiansen Wary of Ghana Threat but Backs Panama to Make Statement

Panama head coach Thomas Christiansen has struck a tone of respect and quiet confidence ahead of his side’s World Cup Group L opener against Ghana, acknowledging the pedigree of their opponents while insisting his team is ready to rise to the occasion.

Speaking before the highly anticipated clash, Christiansen pointed to Ghana’s long-standing presence on football’s biggest stage as a key factor that demands caution. He also highlighted the influence of their relatively new head coach, whose own World Cup background could prove decisive.

“We have a lot of respect for Ghana. They are a team with experience in World Cups,” Christiansen said. “They have a new coach who hasn’t been in charge for very long, but that World Cup experience he possesses can help him convey important information to his players.”

Despite the challenge ahead, the Panama coach drew encouragement from the performances of fellow Concacaf nations in the early stages of the tournament. With the United States, Mexico, and Canada all showing strong form, Christiansen believes Panama has both the responsibility and the capability to continue that momentum for the region.

“The United States, Mexico, and Canada have responded well. We also want to make our mark,” he noted. “We know it will be a difficult match, but the team is in great shape, full of enthusiasm, and confident that we can win.”

Panama’s growing belief has been matched by strong backing from supporters, many of whom have traveled significant distances to be part of the occasion. Christiansen was keen to acknowledge their commitment, describing their presence as a source of pride and motivation for the squad.

“We extend our special thanks to all the fans who support their national team, both in Panama and abroad,” he said. “It has taken a significant investment of time and money to be here. Seeing the stadium filled with Panamanians fills us with pride and will be a vital support throughout the match.”

With respect for Ghana firmly established but ambition equally clear, Panama head into the encounter determined to leave their mark and continue the growing influence of Concacaf teams on the global stage.
