FIFA is set to open disciplinary proceedings against Argentina after members of the team displayed a banner referring to the Malvinas following their FIFA World Cup semi-final victory.
The world football governing body will investigate the incident under its disciplinary regulations, with the display of political or territorial messages at FIFA competitions prohibited.
However, the investigation will not affect Argentina’s preparations for the World Cup final. FIFA has decided that any disciplinary action will only be considered after the tournament concludes, meaning all players involved in the incident will remain eligible for selection.

The decision clears the way for Argentina to field a full-strength squad in Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain as they aim to successfully defend their title.
The Malvinas Islands, known internationally as the Falkland Islands, remain the subject of a long-standing sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom.
Because of the sensitivity of the issue, FIFA closely regulates political expressions during its competitions.
Argentina have enjoyed an impressive campaign en route to the final and will now focus on their showdown with Spain, while awaiting the outcome of FIFA’s disciplinary process after the championship match.
