2026 FIFA WORLD CUP: Lamptey Doubts Black Stars’ Chances Ahead of England Clash

Former Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey has cast doubt over the Black Stars’ chances against England, admitting he would be surprised if Ghana emerge victorious in their crucial World Cup Group L encounter.

The two sides meet on the back of winning starts to their campaigns, with Ghana edging Panama 1-0 while England impressed in a high-scoring victory over Croatia.
Despite Ghana’s positive opening result, Lamptey believes the gap in quality between the teams remains significant.

“I will be surprised if the Black Stars win against England. They are better than us in terms of everything,” he said.
The former Aston Villa forward struck a measured tone, balancing national pride with realism as he assessed the challenge ahead.

“I’m a Ghanaian, and if we win, I will celebrate, but on the face of it, I’ll not be surprised if we lose to England,” he added.

Lamptey’s remarks reflect the broader narrative surrounding the fixture, with England widely viewed as one of the tournament’s stronger contenders, boasting depth, attacking firepower, and experience at the highest level. Ghana, meanwhile, are relying on discipline, structure, and quick transitions as they aim to upset the odds.

The match presents a defining moment for the Black Stars. A win would secure early qualification to the knockout stage and reinforce belief in a squad seeking to recreate the nation’s historic World Cup runs.

However, as Lamptey’s candid assessment suggests, overcoming England will require more than optimism.
