Iran kept their hopes of reaching the next stage alive after battling to a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Egypt in a tense Group G encounter, but their qualification fate now rests on the outcome of the final round of matches in the other groups.
Egypt made the perfect start, taking the lead in just the fifth minute when Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” teed up Mahmoud Saber to fire the group leaders ahead.
Iran responded impressively and were rewarded in the 14th minute as Ramin Rezaeian found the back of the net to restore parity, setting up an entertaining contest.
The remainder of the match saw Egypt dictate possession with 62 percent of the ball and earn eight corner kicks to Iran’s two. Despite controlling much of the play and attempting 15 shots, the Egyptians were unable to find a decisive breakthrough against a resilient Iranian defence.
Iran remained dangerous on the counterattack, registering 13 attempts and four shots on target, one more than Egypt, while both goalkeepers produced two saves each to preserve the deadlock.
The game’s biggest talking point came deep into stoppage time when Iran thought they had snatched a dramatic winner. However, after a VAR review in the 90+6th minute, S. Khalilzadeh’s goal was ruled out, denying Team Melli a famous victory.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-1 draw, a result that leaves Egypt comfortably atop the group while Iran remain on the brink of qualification. They must now wait anxiously for the completion of the final round of matches in the other groups to discover whether their campaign will continue into the knockout stage and if they do, who their next opponent will be.
