2026 FIFA WORLD CUP: Switzerland and Colombia Deadlocked After Tense First Half

Switzerland and Colombia went into the halftime break locked at 0-0 after a tightly contested opening 45 minutes in their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 encounter, with both sides still chasing a place in the quarter-finals against Argentina.

Colombia enjoyed a slight edge in possession, controlling 51 percent of the ball compared to Switzerland’s 49 percent, but clear-cut chances remained at a premium despite the South Americans looking the more adventurous side.

The Colombians registered five total shots to Switzerland’s two and won four corner kicks, compared to just one for the Swiss. However, Switzerland proved more clinical with their opportunities, hitting the target twice from their two attempts, while Colombia managed only one effort on goal from five shots, with three of their attempts blocked by the Swiss defence.

Defensively, both teams remained disciplined. Colombia led the tackle count with nine to Switzerland’s five, while both goalkeepers were called into action, making important saves to keep the contest scoreless heading into the interval.

In midfield, the battle was evenly matched, with each side completing 240 passes. Switzerland held a slight edge in passing accuracy, completing 211 passes at 87 percent compared to Colombia’s 205 completed passes at an 85 percent success rate.

With neither side able to find the breakthrough in an intense and tactical first half, the second period promises to be decisive as Switzerland and Colombia continue their fight for a place in the last eight of the World Cup.
