2026 FIFA WORLD CUP: Tuchel Laughs Off Messi Marking Plan

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has acknowledged the immense challenge of facing Lionel Messi, admitting there is no straightforward way to stop the Argentina captain ahead of their highly anticipated clash.

Speaking before the match, Tuchel joked about the tactical dilemma posed by the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

“I was thinking about it earlier about whether we should man-mark him or…,” Tuchel said with a laugh.

The German coach went on to explain why Messi remains one of the most difficult players in football to contain, regardless of the defensive strategy employed.

“It is very unique to play against Leo Messi. If you lock the spaces, he just finds the spaces,” he said with a shrug. “That’s just the way it is.”

Despite the respect shown to Messi and the reigning world champions, Tuchel insisted neither Argentina nor England are unbeatable.

“Every team is beatable, and so is Argentina and so is England,” he said.

Tuchel revealed that his coaching staff have carried out an extensive tactical analysis of Argentina’s strengths and identified the areas that make Lionel Scaloni’s side so dangerous. However, he stressed that preparation alone will not be enough unless his players execute the game plan on the pitch.

The England manager expressed confidence that his side has a strategy capable of challenging the South American champions, emphasizing that success will ultimately depend on the players’ discipline and commitment to following the tactical instructions throughout the contest.

England now head into the blockbuster encounter believing they have the blueprint to unsettle Argentina, but Tuchel knows that containing Messi and his teammates will require near-perfect execution over the full 90 minutes.
