Ivory Coast struck twice in dramatic late fashion to break Somalia’s stubborn resistance, securing a hard-fought 2–0 victory after looking destined for a frustrating draw.
The visitors were plagued by missed chances for the vast majority of the contest. After Nicolas Pépé missed a golden opportunity right before the break in the 45th minute, Elye Wahi missed another prime chance to put the Elephants ahead in the 56th minute.
Somalia, who saw Hassan booked in the 44th minute for a foul, defended resolutely as the clock ticked down. Tempers flared late on, resulting in a yellow card for Ivory Coast’s Zabi in the 79th minute for arguing as frustration grew among the visitors.
Just as Somalia appeared on the verge of holding out for a memorable point, Ivory Coast finally made their breakthrough in the 89th minute when Yann Gboho found the net.
With Somalia thrown off balance, the Elephants put the match entirely out of reach deep in stoppage time, as Touré scored in the 95th minute (90’+5) to cap a dramatic 2–0 win.
