Asante Kotoko head coach Eric Tinkler has made his ambitions clear, insisting he has joined the Ghanaian giants with the sole objective of competing for major honours.
The South African tactician says Kotoko have the quality and resources to challenge for the league title, stressing that his appointment is about winning trophies rather than simply collecting a salary.
“I am very ambitious. We have the materials to compete for the league. I came here to win things. I am not here just to earn a salary,” Tinkler said.
However, the coach has also raised concerns about the condition of the club’s training pitches, warning that poor playing surfaces could hinder player development and limit the amount of tactical work he can do with his squad.
“The pitches are not good. You’re not going to improve players on pitches like this,” he said.
“I can’t teach the players a lot when we are working on poor pitches.”
Tinkler believes quality training facilities are essential if Kotoko are to reach the level required to compete consistently for domestic honours. The coach is therefore expected to place significant emphasis on improving the club’s training environment as he works to build a competitive squad.
The former Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City coach also revealed that steps have been taken to remove what he described as “rotten elements” within the club.
“We have gotten rid of the rotten elements that existed in the club,” Tinkler stated.
His comments underline the scale of the rebuilding process at Kotoko, with the coach determined to establish a stronger culture both on and off the pitch.
With a clear title-winning ambition, Tinkler now faces the challenge of transforming his vision into results as Asante Kotoko prepare for the new season.
