Riyad Mahrez is changing teams, but not his status. The Algerian international is joining Al Shamal as a free agent. After leaving Al Ahli, the Fennecs captain signed a one-season contract with the Qatari club.
No transfer fee will be paid to his former club, since Mahrez was a free agent. This marks a new chapter for the 35-year-old, who will bring his experience to Al Shamal.
His future had, however, been the subject of much speculation. Côme, Deportivo La Coruna, Turkey, Botafogo, and Al Shabab were among the clubs mentioned as possible destinations.
After several weeks of uncertainty, Mahrez ultimately opted for Qatar.
