Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo has credited former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola for helping shape his understanding of the game, while continuing his development under current head coach Enzo Maresca.
Semenyo, who joined City in January 2026, revealed that Guardiola’s coaching helped him understand the importance of controlling the tempo of a match, knowing when to dribble, accelerate or slow down play. Guardiola left the club in May 2026, with Maresca appointed as his successor in June.
“From day one, I had to understand myself as a player. It’s understanding the pace of the game, when to slow, when to speed up, when to dribble. Pep drilled that into me a lot and it’s helped,” Semenyo said.
The Ghana international also highlighted journaling as an important part of his personal and professional growth, explaining that writing down his experiences and reviewing them helps him track his progress. Now working under Maresca, who previously served as Guardiola’s assistant at City, Semenyo says he continues to learn alongside some of the world’s top players as he seeks to establish himself at the club.
