Ademola Lookman was on target as Atletico Madrid recorded a 2-0 victory over Manchester United in their UEFA Champions League encounter at the Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Super Eagles forward came off the bench to score late in the second half, helping Diego Simeone’s side secure an important win and strengthen their confidence ahead of their next European fixture.
Atletico Madrid made a flying start, taking the lead in the opening minute through Pablo Barrios, who finished a pass from Alex Baena to put the Spanish side in front.
The hosts maintained their attacking intensity and looked comfortable for much of the contest.
However, Johnny Cardoso saw his effort ruled out for offside shortly before the interval, preventing Atletico from extending their advantage before half-time.
Manchester United struggled to find a way back into the game, and their chances of recovering suffered a major blow in the 74th minute when defender Leny Yoro was sent off, reducing the English club to 10 players.
Lookman, who replaced Julian Alvarez in the 71st minute, capitalised on Atletico’s advantage by finding the net eight minutes after coming on.
The Nigerian international’s goal secured the 2-0 victory for Atletico Madrid, capping an influential substitute appearance in front of the home supporters.
