Nigeria’s Flamingos suffered a 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, with goals from Wiktoria Skrzypczak and Natalia Skrok handing the European side a crucial victory.
The Polish team made a bright start to the encounter, putting Nigeria under early pressure as they searched for the opening goal.
Poland came close when the ball fell kindly to Skrok following a corner kick, but her effort towards the bottom corner was cleared off the goal line by Elizabeth Adesuyi in a crucial intervention that temporarily kept the Flamingos in the contest.
However, Nigeria’s resistance was broken shortly afterwards when Zofia Cendrowska raced through on goal.
Nigerian goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho initially saved the forward’s attempt, but Cendrowska was fouled by Ohunene Sunday while attempting to recover the rebound.
Referee awarded Poland a penalty, and Skrzypczak confidently converted the spot kick, sending the ball into the bottom-right corner to give her side the lead.
The goal left Nigeria with work to do as the Flamingos struggled to establish control and create clear-cut scoring opportunities against a determined Polish defence.
Skrok Doubles Poland’s Lead
Poland strengthened their advantage shortly after the hour mark, capitalising on Nigeria’s failure to deal with a dangerous cross from Blanka Zajac.
The delivery caused confusion inside the Nigerian penalty area, and Skrok reacted quickly to fire the loose ball into the net through a crowd of players, extending Poland’s lead to 2-0.
The second goal appeared to put the game beyond Nigeria’s reach, with Poland looking increasingly comfortable as the match progressed.
However, the Flamingos refused to surrender and found a route back into the contest through Oluebube Umejiaku.
The Nigerian midfielder delivered a dangerous free-kick into the penalty area from the right, but the ball evaded everyone in its path before travelling into the far corner of the net.
The goal gave Nigeria renewed hope and set up a tense closing period as the Flamingos pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
Nigeria Miss Late Opportunity
Nigeria came agonisingly close to drawing level when a deflected cross fell to Umejiaku inside the penalty area, approximately eight yards from goal.
With an opportunity to complete a remarkable comeback, the Nigerian player was unable to get her feet organised quickly enough to produce a decisive finish, allowing Poland to escape the danger.
The missed opportunity proved costly as Poland held on to secure all three points from their opening Group B encounter.
Despite their late rally, Nigeria will be disappointed with their inability to convert their opportunities, particularly after conceding twice through defensive lapses.
Flamingos Face Pressure Ahead of Next Fixture
The defeat leaves Nigeria needing a strong response in their remaining group-stage matches as they pursue qualification for the knockout rounds of the Morocco 2026 tournament.
The Flamingos will need to improve their defensive organisation and attacking efficiency to strengthen their chances of progressing in the competition.
For Poland, the victory provides an encouraging start to their campaign, while Nigeria must quickly regroup and focus on their next assignment.
