FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono could face potential legal consequences following the tragic death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel after a collision during their Spanish Segunda División encounter.
The 30-year-old De Miguel passed away on Tuesday, November 3, after suffering serious injuries in a collision with Owono during Monday’s fixture. The incident occurred in the closing stages of the match, forcing its suspension as medical personnel rushed to attend to the Tenerife forward.
According to reports from Spanish media, Owono could face a charge of involuntary manslaughter if investigations establish that his challenge amounted to gross negligence and exceeded the normal risks associated with professional football.
Under Article 142 of the Spanish Penal Code, causing death through gross negligence carries a potential prison sentence of between one and four years. However, criminal responsibility would depend on the findings of investigators and whether negligence and a direct causal link to the death can be established.
The tragedy has reportedly left Owono deeply affected, with the Equatorial Guinea international said to have been quiet on social media following the incident.
No criminal charge or conviction against the goalkeeper has been confirmed. The investigation will be crucial in determining whether the incident was an unfortunate football collision or involved conduct that could attract criminal liability.
