UEFA has announced a minute of silence before all its matches this week following the tragic death of CD Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel. Meanwhile, Spain has suspended several domestic fixtures as tributes continue to pour in for the 30-year-old striker.
The football world remains in mourning after Tenerife confirmed De Miguel’s death on Tuesday, November 3. The forward suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest following a violent collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during Monday’s match. Despite emergency treatment and hospital care, his condition deteriorated overnight. UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin expressed his condolences, saying: “We search for words, but find only silence. In this silence, our hearts and thoughts go out to his family, his teammates, everyone at CD Tenerife, and all those mourning this tragic loss.”
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) also expressed its sadness and extended its condolences to De Miguel’s family, friends, teammates and supporters. In a further gesture of solidarity, UEFA will observe a minute of silence before all its matches scheduled for this week, allowing clubs and supporters across Europe to honour the late Tenerife forward.
Spanish football suspends matches in tribute
The RFEF has also suspended all matches scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, in the first and third rounds of the Copa del Rey and the Copa de la Reina. In addition, the federation cancelled the official presentation of Spain’s Under-21 national team ahead of its scheduled encounter with Japan in Almendralejo. The decision reflects the scale of the shock surrounding De Miguel’s death and the desire to pay tribute to the player.
In its official statement, the RFEF confirmed that it would announce new dates for the postponed fixtures in the coming days. The federation also expressed its solidarity with the player’s family and loved ones, as well as CD Tenerife and its supporters. This latest tragedy has once again brought Spanish football together in grief, with tributes from across the sport highlighting the impact of De Miguel’s passing.
