Lamine Yamal has quickly become one of the brightest stars in European football, dazzling in Spain’s colors and playing a key role in their Euro 2024 triumph.
But the FC Barcelona prodigy could have taken a different path. Eligible to play for Morocco through his father, Yamal ultimately chose to represent La Roja — a decision that put an end to any hopes Morocco had of securing his services.
In an interview with El Chiringuito, Morocco coach Walid Regragui opened up about the situation. “He was very respectful towards me,” said Regragui, “he told me he felt Spanish.”
While the disappointment is undeniable for Moroccan fans, Regragui emphasized the maturity and honesty shown by the young winger during their exchanges. With Yamal now thriving for Spain, his choice seems justified — and Morocco, too, will continue building with pride around its own rising talents.
