Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has raised concerns over his team’s mentality following their 1-1 draw against Jamaica, admitting the performance fell short of expectations as preparations continue for their World Cup opener against Mexico.
“The performance was not what I expected,” Broos said, signaling clear frustration with his side’s display. “I think we have to analyze the game very closely to see what was really wrong, and work to improve it over the next few days so that we are ready for the first game against Mexico.”
South Africa had shown signs of progress in recent outings, but Broos suggested the latest performance exposed underlying issues that must be addressed quickly. Despite believing the team was nearing the desired level, he acknowledged that the display against Jamaica was a step backward.
“I thought we were close to getting to where I want the team to be, but again, it was a disappointing game for me” he added. “So, yes, I have to look at what went wrong.”
Beyond tactical concerns, the Belgian coach pointed directly to mentality as a key factor, stressing that significant improvement will be required if Bafana Bafana are to compete effectively on the global stage.
“I think it was also a matter of mentality,” Broos noted. “We have to do more—much more—than what we did to get good results at the World Cup in the coming weeks.”
With the clash against Mexico looming, Broos and his squad now face a critical period of reflection and adjustment as they aim to raise their level ahead of the tournament’s opening challenge.
