Burkina Faso Mourns Former International Ben Aziz Zagré After Cancer Battle

Burkina Faso football has been plunged into mourning following the death of former international defender Ben Aziz Zagré at the age of 27 after a courageous battle with bone cancer.

Zagré, who represented Burkina Faso at international level, passed away after fighting the illness that ultimately forced him to retire from professional football in 2025. His death has sparked an outpouring of grief across the football community in Burkina Faso and beyond.

The defender spent part of his career in Portugal, featuring for Vitória SC and AD Fafe, where he earned recognition for his determination, defensive qualities, and commitment on the pitch. However, his promising career was cut short when he was diagnosed with bone cancer, leading to his premature retirement last year.

In a heartfelt tribute, the Burkina Faso Football Federation expressed its sorrow over the loss of one of the country’s young talents.

“Burkina Faso has lost a young talent taken from his loved ones far too soon. May the land of our ancestors rest lightly upon you,” the federation said in a statement.

Zagré’s passing marks a tragic loss for Burkinabè football, with many remembering him not only for his abilities as a player but also for the courage and resilience he displayed throughout his battle with illness.

Tributes continue to pour in from former teammates, clubs, supporters, and members of the football fraternity as Burkina Faso bids farewell to a player whose life and career ended far too soon.

He was 27.
