Motsepe Stays Firm on AFCON Trophy Dispute as CAF Awaits CAS Ruling

President of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, has reiterated his stance on the ongoing dispute surrounding the AFCON trophy and medals, stressing that the matter remains strictly within the jurisdiction of sport’s highest legal authority.

Responding to questions on whether the Senegal national football team would be required to return the trophy and medals to be handed over to Morocco national football team, Motsepe made clear that CAF will respect due process and await a final ruling.

“There’s nothing I can tell you that I haven’t said already, 10, 15, even 100 times. Ask me again 100 times and the answer will be the same. It’s my duty and obligation as CAF President,” he stated.

Motsepe emphasized that the matter is currently before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), describing it as the ultimate authority in global football disputes. He stressed that the governing body will fully implement whatever decision is reached.

“We have an obligation to respect the matter before CAS. For now, our focus must shift to the upcoming World Cup,” he added, signalling a desire to move attention toward preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The CAF President’s remarks underscore the federation’s commitment to due process while attempting to keep focus on Africa’s global football ambitions.
