2026 FIFA World Cup: Ismaël Koné Out Of The Tournament After Serious Leg Injury

Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné was forced off with a serious leg injury during his country’s 6-0 victory over Qatar at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, in a moment that overshadowed an otherwise historic night for the Canadian team.

The incident occurred early in the second half at BC Place in Vancouver when Koné was caught in a heavy challenge from Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo.

The tackle left the Canadian midfielder in immediate distress, with play halted as medical staff rushed onto the pitch to attend to him.

Koné received lengthy on-field treatment before being stretchered off and taken to hospital, with an air cast reportedly applied to stabilise his lower leg.

Early reports from the stadium suggested a possible fracture, although no official diagnosis has yet been confirmed.

The severity of the injury was reflected in the reaction of players from both sides, many of whom were visibly shaken as Koné received treatment.

The referee initially cautioned Madibo, but after a VAR review, the decision was upgraded to a straight red card for the challenge.

The match was briefly disrupted as medical personnel carefully shielded Koné while he was treated, with silence across large sections of the stadium as concern grew for the Canadian midfielder’s condition.

Koné’s injury casts doubt over his participation for the remainder of the tournament, dealing a major blow to Canada’s midfield options despite their dominant performance on the night.
