Africa’s biggest football festival is set to make a landmark return to East Africa, with exactly one year remaining before the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Kenya–Tanzania–Uganda 2027 officially kicks off on 19 June 2027.
For the first time since 1976, the continent’s premier football tournament will be staged in East Africa, as Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda jointly host the competition in what is already being described as a historic moment for African football.
The tournament final is scheduled for 17 July 2027.
The three host nations are expected to welcome more than 1.5 million fans across various venues, underscoring the scale and growing global appeal of AFCON, which now commands an estimated television audience of over 3.2 billion viewers worldwide.
CAF is currently in ongoing discussions with the local organizing committees and the governments of the three countries to finalize key ceremonial decisions, including the host nation for the final draw in March 2027, as well as venues for the opening match and the championship final.
“PAMOJA” Spirit Defines AFCON 2027 Vision
The tournament will be played under the theme “PAMOJA,” a Swahili word meaning “Together,” symbolizing unity, cooperation, and shared progress across the African continent.
The theme reflects the Confederation of African Football’s broader ambition of using the sport as a unifying force across nations and cultures.
Road to Qualification Already Underway
The journey to AFCON 2027 has already begun following the qualifying draw held in Cairo in May, where 48 African nations discovered their paths to the finals.
Football heavyweights such as Morocco, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Senegal, Algeria, Nigeria, Cameroon, Tunisia, South Africa, and DR Congo are all set to begin their qualification campaigns when matches commence in September 2026.
The qualifiers will be played across three FIFA international windows:
Matchdays 1 & 2: 21 September – 6 October 2026
Matchdays 3 & 4: 9 – 17 November 2026
Matchdays 5 & 6: 22 – 30 March 2027
Although Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda have automatically qualified as host nations, they will still participate in the qualifying rounds, with only one additional team progressing from each of their groups.
Global Growth of AFCON Continues
The CAF Africa Cup of Nations has continued to expand its global footprint, with recent editions in Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, and Morocco recording unprecedented viewership figures and fan engagement.
The tournament has firmly established itself as Africa’s most prestigious football competition and one of the most-watched sporting events in the world.
Final Year of Preparation Begins
With 365 days remaining before kickoff, anticipation is rising across the continent. CAF, alongside the governments and organizing committees of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, is intensifying preparations to deliver a tournament that reflects Africa’s passion, unity, and growing influence in world football.
AFCON 2027 is not only expected to celebrate elite football but also to showcase East Africa on a global stage, marking a defining chapter in the history of African sport.
