2026 FIFA World Cup: Diatta regrets late defeat

At the end of a thrilling match in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, the Lions of Teranga were eliminated by Belgium with a score of 3–2.

Despite putting up a strong fight, Pape Thiaw’s men are leaving the tournament early, leaving behind immense regret.

Cruelly disappointed by this outcome, Senegal’s Krepin Diatta did not hide his frustration at the final whistle, pointing to the team’s collective attitude in the decisive moments.

”We shouldn’t have lost that match at that moment. The team lacked character. In the final minutes, we had to give it our all even if it meant throwing our bodies into every challenge to win the duels, we had to do it. There are things we need to review. We fell short. There are no excuses. The people deserve better.”

This elimination feels like a massive setback for Senegalese soccer, which had high hopes for this World Cup.

Now that they’re out of the running, the Lions will have to lick their wounds and quickly analyze the shortcomings highlighted by Diatta to begin a new rebuilding phase.
