Colombia secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ghana to book their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, with Jhon Arias’ first-half strike proving the difference in a fiercely contested knockout encounter.
Arias netted the decisive goal in the 14th minute after an early spell of Colombian dominance, giving Los Cafeteros a lead they never relinquished despite Ghana’s determined efforts to mount a comeback.
The South Americans controlled possession throughout the match, finishing with 61 percent of the ball compared to Ghana’s 39 percent. They also created far more opportunities, registering 16 shots, including six on target, while Ghana failed to test the Colombian goalkeeper with a single effort on target despite eight attempts.
Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi kept the Black Stars in the contest with five crucial saves, denying Colombia on several occasions as they searched for a second goal to kill off the game.
The encounter was physical, with five yellow cards shown. Colombia’s Jhon Arias and Richard Ríos were cautioned, while Ghana’s Caleb Yirenkyi, Abdul Fatawu and Alidu Seidu also entered the referee’s notebook.
Both teams were forced into early injury substitutions. Colombia lost Jhon Córdoba in the eighth minute, with Luis Suárez coming on in his place, while Ghana suffered a setback when Senaya was forced off five minutes later and replaced by Alidu Seidu.
Luis Díaz thought he had doubled Colombia’s advantage in the 57th minute, but his effort was ruled out for offside, leaving the contest alive until the final whistle.
Despite Ghana’s spirited defensive display and resilience, Carlos Queiroz’s side could not find the breakthrough they desperately needed, bringing their World Cup campaign to an end. Colombia, meanwhile, march into the Round of 16 full of confidence after a composed and professional knockout performance.
