Mendy Calls for Deep Reflection After Senegal’s World Cup Exit

Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has broken his silence following the Teranga Lions’ World Cup elimination, describing the team’s exit as a failure while calling for honest self-evaluation at every level of Senegalese football.

In a heartfelt statement posted on his X page, Mendy admitted that Senegal possessed the quality to progress further in the tournament but ultimately fell short. The goalkeeper also revealed that he did everything possible to recover from injury in time to help the team, but his efforts were not enough to change their fate.

“This elimination is a failure. We had the quality to go further, but we didn’t. I gave everything to recover from my injury and return in time to help the team until the end, but it wasn’t enough.”

Mendy stressed that the disappointment should serve as a turning point rather than be brushed aside. He urged the team and the Senegalese Football Federation to confront difficult truths and conduct a thorough review of what worked and, more importantly, what prevented the team from achieving its objective.

“Now we must have the courage to face reality. A competition of this level demands deep self-examination—not a superficial one, but honest and demanding work on everything that helped us move forward and, above all, everything that stopped us from reaching our goal.”

The former African champion added that meaningful progress comes from accepting uncomfortable truths, insisting that Senegal must ask the right questions, make the right decisions, and raise its standards if it hopes to compete for football’s biggest prizes.

Concluding his message, Mendy expressed confidence that Senegal can emerge stronger from the setback.

“Senegal deserves a team and a federation capable of turning failures into lessons and lessons into victories. It is up to us to be worthy of that.”
