2026 FIFA World Cup:Tuchel Shifts Focus to France Clash

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has defended the tactical decisions he made during his side’s 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup semi-final, insisting he has no regrets despite criticism over his substitutions.

England had taken the lead before Argentina mounted a late comeback with two goals to book a place in Sunday’s final against Spain.

The defeat has sparked widespread debate, with Tuchel facing criticism for adopting a more defensive approach in the closing stages of the match.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s third-place playoff against France in Miami, Tuchel said every decision he made was aimed at helping the team secure victory.

The German manager explained that he relied on his experience, instinct and competitive mindset when making changes during the game, stressing that he would have regretted remaining passive rather than taking action.

Tuchel also pointed to the demanding nature of England’s World Cup campaign, saying the team’s schedule may have taken its toll.

He cited the physically challenging round-of-16 victory over Mexico at high altitude, the exhausting extra-time quarter-final win against Norway in the intense Miami heat, and the extensive travel throughout the tournament as possible contributing factors.

He rejected suggestions that the substitutions were purely defensive, arguing that football is more complex than simply categorising changes as attacking or defensive.

According to him, no one can say with certainty that different substitutions would have produced a different outcome.

Responding to criticism from some quarters, including comments describing his tactics as “cowardly,” Tuchel declined to engage in the debate, saying he does not pay attention to either praise or criticism.

The England manager noted that victory over France would still represent the country’s best World Cup performance in six decades, despite the disappointment of missing out on the final.

England, who lifted the World Cup in 1966, have previously lost both of their third-place playoff matches following semi-final exits in 1990 and 2018.

Looking ahead to Saturday’s encounter, Tuchel confirmed he would rotate his squad and described the match against France as another opportunity for England to demonstrate their progress against one of the world’s strongest football nations.

He acknowledged that every team would have preferred to be contesting the final but stressed that the third-place playoff remains an official World Cup fixture and an important chance for England to finish the tournament on a positive note.
