Uganda’s continental representatives Vipers SC and Kitara FC will begin their respective CAF campaigns next month, with both clubs targeting progress beyond the preliminary rounds.
Champions Vipers will face Mauritanian champions FC Nouadhibou in the first preliminary round of the CAF Champions League, with the first leg scheduled for September 4–6 at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
The return leg will be played in Mauritania between September 11–13. The winner will meet either Côte d’Ivoire’s FC San Pedro or Nigeria’s Rivers United in the second preliminary round
Vipers head into the campaign after strengthening their squad, with Farouk Miya, Caesar Manzoki, Loyce Mbaba, Jacques Mangoba and Nicholas Mwere among the new additions.
The reigning StarTimes Uganda Premier League champions will also have to cope with the departure of Cranes defender Rogers Torach, who joined Algerian side CS Constantine. Kitara, meanwhile, will make their return to continental football in the CAF Confederation Cup after winning the Uganda Cup last season.
The Royals have been drawn against Somalia’s Mogadishu City, with the first leg set for September 4–6 and the return leg a week later. Progress would set up a major second-round assignment against Egyptian giants Al Ahly, who are 12-time African champions.
Before their continental campaigns begin, Vipers and Kitara will meet in the FUFA Super Cup on August 22, providing both sides with an early competitive test.
The two clubs will also be looking to improve on their previous continental outings. Vipers reached the second preliminary round of last season’s Champions League before losing 3–2 on aggregate to Zambia’s Power Dynamos, while Kitara were eliminated by Libya’s Al Hilal Benghazi in the Confederation Cup preliminary round in 2024.
The upcoming campaigns therefore offer both clubs another opportunity to measure their domestic progress against continental opposition.
