Amnesty International Raises Alarm Over Human Rights Risks Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Global rights body Amnesty International has issued a stark warning ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, highlighting what it describes as a potential “human rights emergency” across the three host nations.

In a detailed 36-page report, the organization outlines a range of concerns spanning the United States, Mexico, and Canada—raising questions about the safety, inclusivity, and civil liberties of fans expected to travel for the tournament.

In the United States, Amnesty points to fears over mass arrests by immigration enforcement authorities, particularly involving ICE agents, as well as growing unease among LGBTQI+ communities. The report also flags restrictions affecting fans from four unnamed countries who could be barred from entry, alongside broader concerns about limitations on peaceful assembly during the competition.

Mexico, another key host, is highlighted for its heavy military presence and persistent security challenges. Amnesty warns that high levels of violence in certain regions could pose risks to both local residents and visiting supporters if not adequately addressed.

Meanwhile, in Canada, the report focuses on social concerns, cautioning that vulnerable populations—particularly homeless communities—could face increased marginalization as cities prepare to host matches and accommodate global audiences.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by the three nations, is set to be the largest in history, amplifying both its global appeal and the scale of logistical and governance challenges. Amnesty International is urging authorities and FIFA to take proactive steps to safeguard human rights, ensure inclusive access, and prevent abuses in the lead-up to and during the tournament.

With millions of fans expected to attend, the report serves as a timely reminder that beyond the spectacle of football, scrutiny over human rights standards will remain firmly in focus.
