Aston Villa have raised concerns with officiating authorities over the Premier League’s new rules regarding injuries and substitutions. Under the new regulations, any player who receives treatment on the pitch must leave the field and remain on the sidelines for 60 seconds, temporarily leaving his team with 10 players.
The rules also state that if a substituted player takes more than 10 seconds to leave the pitch, his replacement must wait until the next stoppage after the one-minute period before entering. According to the Daily Mail, several Premier League clubs have questioned how referees will distinguish genuine injuries from deliberate time-wasting.
Villa believe officials need to show greater discretion when applying the rules, particularly in situations where a routine stoppage could leave a team at a disadvantage for longer than expected. Their concerns come during a busy summer transfer window that saw the club sign Alejandro Garnacho, Nicolas Jackson, Ibrahim Mbaye, Johan Manzambi, João Gomes, Zion Suzuki, Matteo Ruggeri and Leon Goretzka, while Morgan Rogers moved to Chelsea for around €130 million.
The new regulations aim to reduce time-wasting and prevent players from using injuries to disrupt the flow of matches. However, Aston Villa fear that strict enforcement could unfairly punish teams when injuries occur during normal play. The club therefore wants referees to retain enough flexibility to assess each situation rather than apply the rule automatically.
