Zambia Super League side Red Arrows played against TP Mazembe and were handed a stern lesson in intensity and clinical finishing as Congolese giants secured a 2-0 victory over the Airmen in a fiercely contested international friendly match.
The match that turned out to be more than a pre-season fixture and attracted scores of fans, gave a real glimpse into the demands that await the Airmen in the domestic league and on the CAF continental stage.
From the first whistle, the contest was played at a blistering tempo. Both sides traded attacks in an end to end opening, with neither willing to retreat.
Red Arrows showed ambition going forward while Mazembe’s experience and composure provided a constant threat. A late change to the Arrows starting XI saw Joseph Phiri ruled out after picking up a knock during the warm-up and saw Mandanji drafted into the starting lineup.
Nine minutes in, Ackim Mumba gave the Mazembe defence an early warning and powered beyond his marker before firing narrowly wide. Mazembe responded with a dangerous free kick three minutes later, one that broke through the Airmen’s defensive wall but rolled just wide of goal.
The intensity continued to rise. At the midway point of the first half, Red Arrows came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock. Michee had delivered an inviting cross and Godfrey Ngwenya rose highest to meet it. With the Mazembe goalkeeper caught off his line, the ball appeared destined for the net, only for a defender to produce a crucial goalline clearance.
Paul Katema then tried his luck from distance with a strike reminiscent of a classic Frank Lampard effort type but the attempt drifted wide. Then came the cruelest moment of the half. Red Arrows had just been presented with a golden opportunity. Mandanji dispossessed a TP defender and raced through one-on-one with the Mazembe goalkeeper but the Congolese shot-stopper stood tall and denied him.
Moments later, Mazembe punished the missed opportunity. A long ball forward, two swift touches and a clinical finish saw the visitors take the lead in the 36th minute. It was a painful turnaround, the kind of moment that separates promising football from a ruthless one.
The Airmen pushed for an equaliser before the break and came close again in added time when Saddam Phiri found himself with a golden opportunity but the chance went begging. Mazembe went into the interval with the advantage.
Red Arrows returned for the second half determined to respond but the visitors struck again in the 50th minute. Tp Mazembe’s Nyembo latched onto the ball after a slick interchange of passes and unleashed a low long range finish beyond the reach of the Arrows goalkeeper just outside the box.
The Airmen refused to fold and Head coach Chisi Mbewe responded with a triple substitution in the 58th minute, introducing Lazarous Chishimba, birthday boy Peter Kalota and John Pweto for Zephaniah Phiri, Saddam Phiri and Godfrey Ngwenya.
Kalota immediately injected energy into the attack, delivering a pinpoint ball into the box. Mandanji met it with a header but once again the finish drifted wide.
The chances continued to arrive, but the goals remained elusive. Mumba was forced off after picking up a knock in the 75th minute, with Angel Lubamba taking his place. Lubamba later came close, heading over the bar from a promising position.
Five minutes of added time offered the Airmen one final opportunity to alter the scoreline but Mazembe held firm, who also had made a number of changes. And if there was one message the Airmen should take from this encounter, it is simple, this is the level of fight they must be ready for.
The domestic league will demand consistency. CAF inter-club football will demand even more sharper decision making, greater concentration, technical switch, mental and physical courage and above all, the ability to turn chances into goals.
In the match, Red Arrows created moments. They threatened. They competed. But the Congolese giants demonstrated what happens when opportunities are presented to a side that knows how to punish them.It was a high intensity examination against an opponent accustomed to the demands of continental football.
But for the Airmen, it was precisely what preparation is supposed to reveal. You cannot learn how to fight by avoiding the fight. TP Mazembe brought the intensity, the experience and the ruthlessness. Red Arrows now know the standard. The league is coming. CAF is coming. And the Airmen have been given an early taste of what awaits.
