Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has admitted that Iñaki Williams’ decision to retire from international football came as a disappointment to the football governing body.
Williams recently announced his retirement from the Black Stars after four years of representing Ghana at senior level, bringing an end to his international career with the national team.
Speaking about the decision, Okraku said he was initially “disturbed” by the forward’s announcement but acknowledged the physical challenges Williams had endured during his time with Ghana.
“I was disturbed by his decision. The entire Football Association was disappointed, but when you hear him out, you understand his situation,” Okraku said.
“He has been playing through a lot of pain and injuries. We have to appreciate what he has done for Ghana.”
Williams made his Ghana debut in June 2022 after switching his international allegiance from Spain. He went on to earn 28 caps and score two goals for the Black Stars.
The Athletic Club forward featured for Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and remained part of the national team setup in subsequent international campaigns until he resigned from the national team.
