Medeama SC and Nations FC will each receive $100,000 from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) despite their elimination in the first round of the continental competitions.
The two Ghanaian clubs are among the teams eliminated in the early qualifying rounds of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup who will benefit from CAF’s financial support initiative.
Medeama exited the Champions League after suffering a 4–1 aggregate defeat to Congolese giants TP Mazembe, while Nations FC were eliminated from the Confederation Cup after losing 2–1 on aggregate to Mali’s FC Diarra.
The $100,000 payment is expected to provide important financial relief for participating clubs, helping them offset expenses associated with continental campaigns, including flights, accommodation and other logistical costs.
The initiative represents a significant change from previous years, when clubs eliminated at the early stages of CAF competitions received no financial compensation.
For clubs such as Medeama and Nations FC, the new payment provides some return for the considerable costs involved in representing Ghana on the continental stage and is being viewed as an important step towards strengthening club football across Africa.
