World Cup 2026 : Jürgen Klopp slams opening match

World Cup 2026 began with a 2-0 victory for Mexico against South Africa, but the opening match quickly attracted heavy criticism despite the excitement surrounding the tournament. The game featured three red cards and several tense moments, yet many observers felt the overall quality failed to match the standards expected at a World Cup. Among the harshest critics was Jürgen Klopp, who openly expressed his disappointment on German television channel ZDF.

The former Liverpool FC manager criticized both teams’ tactical approach and especially their defensive positioning throughout the match. Klopp stated that even with a numerical advantage, the teams continued making defensive mistakes and failed to produce high-level football.

According to him, South Africa never truly took advantage of the spaces available, while Mexico struggled to fully control the game despite eventually securing the victory.

Former German international Christoph Kramer also shared Klopp’s opinion during the broadcast. Kramer admitted he expected a more intense and competitive encounter given the atmosphere surrounding the tournament opener. Instead, he described the match as lacking real intensity and compared it to a charity game rather than a World Cup fixture. These comments have already sparked debate among fans as the World Cup 2026 continues with more group stage matches scheduled in the coming days.
