Tennis Djokovic To Clash With Alcaraz Again In Wimbledon Final

Novak Djokovic defeated Lorenzo Musetti on Friday to go to the Wimbledon final against reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz, one win away from a record-setting 25th Grand Slam title.

Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, advanced to his tenth All England Club final with a 6-4, 7-6 (7/2), 6-4 victory over Italy’s 25th seed.

Alcaraz defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-7 (1/7), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to his fourth Grand Slam final.

If Djokovic, 37, avenges his final loss to Alcaraz last year, he will tie Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles and become the tournament’s oldest victor of the modern era.

The last time Djokovic and Musetti met was at the French Open in June, when the Serb won a third-round match that concluded at 3:07 in the morning.

On Friday, however, Djokovic was unconcerned on his route to a 37th Grand Slam final.

He broke for a 4-2 lead in the opener, and despite losing the advantage and two set points in the ninth game, he broke again in the tenth to win the set.

The second seed was in his 49th Grand Slam semifinal, while Musetti, 22, was making his debut.

That expertise was crucial as Djokovic rallied from losing service in the first game of the second set to tie in the sixth before dominating the tiebreak.

A break in the first game of the third set propelled him to win over a demoralised Musetti, who saved three match points as Djokovic advanced to another Wimbledon final.

In the 2023 Wimbledon final, Alcaraz defeated Djokovic in a five-set thriller.

If he wins on Sunday, he will become only the sixth player to win the French Open and Wimbledon crowns consecutively.

In his semifinal, Alcaraz dominated Medvedev with 55 wins to 31.

Medvedev, who lost to the Spaniard at the same level last year, led twice with breaks in the first set before being pegged back.

Umpire Eva Asderaki issued him a warning for unsportsmanlike behaviour after he appeared to have a foul-mouthed reaction to a ball penalised for bouncing twice in the ninth game.

Asderaki brought the tournament referee and supervisor to Centre Court, but Medvedev shrugged it off to win the tie-break and the first set.

This was Alcaraz’s third first-set loss at Wimbledon this year.

Alcaraz responded brilliantly, broke Medvedev for a 3-1 lead in the second after winning the previous game on a 27-shot rally.

In the third set, the 21-year-old struck 14 winners and took the only break of the game.

Medvedev, who defeated world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals, took a break early in the fourth set.

However, Alcaraz continued his assault, edging ahead for 4-3 on his path to triumph.
