Ajax needed 34 penalties to defeat Panathinaikos 13-12 in a long shootout on Thursday, breaking the UEFA competition record after their Europa League third qualifying round tie ended 1-1 after two legs and extra time.
Ajax, who won 1-0 at Panathinaikos last week, surrendered in the 89th minute in Amsterdam, forcing a shootout that eclipsed the previous record of 32 attempts set in 2007 during the European U-21 Championship semi-final between the Netherlands and England, which the Netherlands won 13-12.
The world record for the longest shootout was set in May when Israeli third-tier clubs SC Dimona and Shimshon Tel Aviv required 56 penalties to settle their semi-final promotion playoff encounter.

Ajax goalkeeper Remko Pasveer made five saves and scored on his own attempt to help the hosts win the shootout, while Dutch international Brian Brobbey missed two penalties.
Anton Gaaei, Ajax’s defender, ultimately scored the clinching penalty. The Eredivisie club will now meet Polish club Jagiellonia Bialystok in the playoffs later this month.
