Top News Evans Quits Northern Ireland National Team

Captain of Northern Ireland Jonny Evans has announced his immediate retirement from international football.

The Manchester United defender has more national playing experience than only three men and two women combined: Steven Davis, Julie Nelson, Pat Jennings, Ashley Hutton, and Aaron Hughes.

The 36-year-old gained the final of his 107 caps against Spain in June.

He was named an MBE in 2023 for his contributions to Northern Ireland football.

Evans said in a statement that he has given his international career a lot of thought and that he feels the time is appropriate to end it following a “privilege” of representing Northern Ireland.

“Putting on the green shirt 107 times and representing the people of Northern Ireland has been my biggest honour,” he said.

Against the same opponents, Evans made his debut for his nation in 2006, opening the historic 3-2 triumph over La Roja while Lawrie Sanchez was leading the team.

The former player for West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City would go on to play a significant role for Ian Baraclough, Nigel Worthington, Sanchez’s successor, and both of current manager Michael O’Neill’s stints.
