2026 FIFA World Cup: Bielsa Admits Responsibility as Uruguay Crash Out

Uruguay head coach Marcelo Bielsa has taken full responsibility for his team’s disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting he failed to inspire his players after their 1-0 defeat to Spain ended their campaign.

The two-time world champions finished bottom of Group H without a victory, following earlier draws against Saudi Arabia and tournament debutants Cape Verde.

The defeat to Spain sealed Uruguay’s elimination and made them the only South American side to miss out on the knockout stage.

Speaking after the match, Bielsa delivered a blunt assessment of his contribution during the tournament.

“I couldn’t boost the Uruguay players. I leave nothing to the country,” the Argentine coach said, expressing deep disappointment over his team’s performances.

Bielsa also explained his decision to substitute captain Federico Valverde during the game, saying the tactical change was aimed at increasing Uruguay’s attacking threat.

“I wanted more presence in attack,” he said, insisting the substitution was purely for football reasons.

The veteran coach also addressed the unexpected withdrawal of experienced goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, revealing that the decision came from the player himself.

“I didn’t talk to him about anything — he asked to leave,” Bielsa stated.

Uruguay entered the tournament with high expectations but struggled to convert possession into goals throughout the group stage.

Their early exit marks one of the nation’s most disappointing World Cup campaigns in recent years and raises questions about the team’s future as attention turns to rebuilding ahead of upcoming international competitions.
