Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has revealed the emotional story behind his tears after being named Man of the Match in his side’s hard-fought goalless draw against Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The veteran shot-stopper produced a series of outstanding saves to frustrate the Spanish attack throughout the contest, helping Cape Verde secure a valuable point against one of the tournament favorites. His heroic performance earned him applause, but the emotions that followed the final whistle were driven by much more than football.
Speaking after the game, an emotional Vozinha explained that thoughts of his family overwhelmed him as he reflected on the journey that had brought him to the world’s biggest stage.
“I cried after the game because I grew up with my grandparents when I was a kid, and they could not be there,” Vozinha said.
The goalkeeper revealed that both of his grandparents, who played a major role in raising him, had passed away several years ago.
“They passed away a few years ago,” he added.
Vozinha also disclosed that his mother was unable to travel to the United States to witness one of the proudest moments of his career due to visa complications and financial constraints.
“My mum could not be here either for a visa issue, and the money we had to pay for it. We did not manage to do this in time,” he said.
Despite the personal disappointment of not having his closest family members in the stands, Vozinha’s performance gave Cape Verde a memorable result on the global stage. His string of crucial interventions ensured Spain were kept at bay, preserving a clean sheet and earning admiration from fans around the world.
While the award recognized his excellence between the posts, Vozinha’s heartfelt comments served as a reminder of the sacrifices, struggles and family stories that often lie behind football’s greatest moments. For the Cape Verdean goalkeeper, the draw against Spain was not only a professional triumph but also an emotional tribute to the loved ones who helped shape his journey.
