South Africa midfielder Themba Zwane has been handed an extended suspension by FIFA following a disciplinary review of the red card incident that occurred during Bafana Bafana’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Mexico.
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee ruled that Zwane’s actions constituted a breach of Article 14 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which deals with violent conduct and serious misconduct on the field.
The offence carries a minimum sanction of three matches, significantly increasing the initial one-match suspension automatically triggered by a red card.
The experienced midfielder was sent off late in South Africa’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico after a VAR review determined that he had committed an act of violent conduct against Mexican winger Roberto Alvarado.
The incident left South Africa with nine men and sparked concerns that further disciplinary action could follow.
The extended ban is a major setback for coach Hugo Broos and the South African national team, as Zwane is one of the squad’s most influential and experienced players.
The suspension means he will miss crucial World Cup group-stage fixtures, dealing a significant blow to Bafana Bafana’s hopes of advancing to the knockout rounds.
FIFA’s decision underlines its commitment to maintaining discipline and fair play during the World Cup, with the governing body taking a firm stance against violent conduct and other breaches of its disciplinary regulations.
South Africa will now have to rely on other midfield options as they seek to recover from their opening defeat and keep their World Cup campaign alive.
