2026 FIFA World Cup:  Qatar’s Assim Madibo Gets Five-Match Ban

FIFA has handed Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo a five-match suspension following the tackle that left Canada’s Ismaël Koné with a broken leg during their FIFA World Cup Group B clash.

Madibo was shown a straight red card after a reckless challenge from behind on Koné in the second half of Canada’s emphatic 6-0 victory over Qatar in Vancouver.

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee ruled that the punishment was for “serious foul play,” with the decision still subject to appeal.

The incident overshadowed Canada’s historic first-ever men’s World Cup victory. Koné suffered fractures to both the tibia and fibula in his left leg and was stretchered off before undergoing surgery.

The severity of the injury shocked players and fans alike, with the match temporarily halted as medical personnel attended to the Canadian midfielder.

Madibo appeared visibly distressed after the challenge and later visited Koné in hospital alongside Qatar’s sports minister in a gesture of sportsmanship.

Images released by the Qatar Football Association showed the two players embracing during the visit.

The suspension is a significant blow to Qatar’s World Cup campaign, with Madibo set to miss not only the remainder of the group stage but also additional matches should the Gulf nation advance in the tournament.

Qatar are battling to keep their knockout-stage hopes alive following the heavy defeat to Canada.

The decision underscores FIFA’s commitment to protecting player safety as the 2026 FIFA World Cup enters a crucial stage, with Koné now facing a lengthy recovery while Canada continue their quest for a deep run in the
