Troost-Ekong Foundation Set to Host Secondary School Football Tournament in Akwa Ibom

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong is set to give young football talents in Akwa Ibom State a major platform to showcase their abilities, as his foundation prepares to organise a secondary school football tournament in the state.

The competition, being staged in collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State Football Association, is expected to bring together promising male and female footballers from secondary schools across the state.

The tournament is designed to provide a competitive environment where young players can develop their skills, gain valuable match experience and attract the attention of coaches, scouts and other stakeholders in the football ecosystem.

For Troost-Ekong, the initiative represents another step towards using football as a vehicle for youth development and creating opportunities for talented youngsters to pursue their ambitions in the sport.

The involvement of the Akwa Ibom State Football Association is also expected to strengthen the tournament’s structure and provide a pathway for identifying players who could potentially progress into organised youth football and, eventually, the professional game.

The inclusion of both boys’ and girls’ teams is particularly significant, as it gives young female footballers an opportunity to compete and showcase their abilities alongside their male counterparts.

With schools from different parts of Akwa Ibom expected to participate, the tournament could also help broaden the talent pool available to the state while encouraging schools to place greater emphasis on sports development.

Troost-Ekong, who has represented Nigeria at the highest level and captained the Super Eagles, has remained closely associated with football development initiatives.

His foundation’s latest project is expected to use his experience and influence to inspire the next generation of Nigerian footballers.

Beyond the competitive aspect, the tournament is expected to promote teamwork, discipline, leadership and healthy competition among participating students.

The initiative could also serve as an important scouting opportunity, allowing football stakeholders to identify players who may otherwise struggle to gain exposure outside their school environment.

As preparations continue, attention will now turn to the participating schools, tournament schedule and other details ahead of the competition.

The event is expected to further underline the growing importance of grassroots football development in Nigeria and the role former professionals can play in creating sustainable opportunities for young talents.
