Kenya’s Edwin Kipyego and Ethiopia’s Zenebe Aberu emerged champions in the men’s and women’s categories respectively as the second edition of the Enugu City International Marathon was successfully concluded on Saturday.
The colourful road race attracted more than 3,000 runners, with thousands of spectators lining major streets across Enugu to witness one of Nigeria’s biggest long-distance sporting events.
Organised by Nilayo Sports Management Limited, the marathon brought together athletes and running enthusiasts from different parts of Nigeria and beyond, further strengthening Enugu State’s growing reputation as a destination for major sporting events.
The 42-kilometre race commenced at 6:30 a.m. from Shoprite on Abakaliki Road, with competitors navigating a challenging route through major parts of the Coal City.
The athletes raced through Independence Layout, Okpara Avenue and Nike Lake Road before making their way to the finish line at the Mike Okpara Square.
Kipyego demonstrated his endurance and class to emerge winner of the men’s 42KM race, while Aberu produced an impressive performance to claim the women’s title for Ethiopia.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, was also on ground to provide technical support, ensuring that the competition was conducted in line with the required standards for a major road race.
Beyond the competition, the event created an atmosphere of excitement across Enugu, as residents and visitors turned out in large numbers to cheer the runners along the marathon route.
The successful conclusion of the second edition of the Enugu City International Marathon is expected to further boost athletics development, promote healthy living and enhance the profile of Enugu as a host city for major national and international sporting events.
