African Handball: Road to the Olympics to Expand in 2028

The African Handball Confederation has announced the introduction of a Men’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) starting in 2028 to allow nations on the continent to compete for a spot in the Olympic Games.

This was the key decision made by the African Handball Confederation’s council on Monday in Luanda. Starting in 2028, the Men’s Senior African Championship will no longer serve as a qualifier for the Olympic Games but will retain its role as a qualifier for the World Championship.

To qualify for the Olympic Games, nations will now compete in an Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Four nations will compete in this tournament each time: the host country, the African champion, and the two highest-ranked teams from the African Cup of Nations.
