NPFL Slams Rivers United With N15m Suspended Fine Over Blocked Live Broadcast

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has slammed Rivers United with a suspended fine of ₦15 million for allegedly obstructing the live broadcast of their league fixture against Rangers International on Sunday.

The league’s disciplinary action follows an incident in which Rivers United reportedly prevented the live transmission of the encounter, raising concerns over compliance with the NPFL’s broadcasting regulations and its efforts to improve the commercial value and visibility of the domestic league.

As part of the disciplinary measures, the Port Harcourt-based club has been handed a ₦15 million suspended financial sanction.

However, the punishment comes with a stern warning that any repeat of the offence could attract more severe consequences.

The NPFL has warned that Rivers United risk forfeiting three points and three goals if the club commits a similar violation in the future.

The sanction underscores the league’s determination to enforce its broadcasting guidelines and ensure that clubs cooperate with the arrangements put in place to deliver live coverage of NPFL matches.

Live broadcasting remains a critical component of the league’s commercial development, providing supporters with access to matches while increasing the exposure of clubs, players, sponsors and other stakeholders.

The development also sends a strong message to other NPFL clubs about the importance of respecting the league’s broadcast arrangements and contractual obligations.

Rivers United, one of Nigeria’s prominent football clubs, must now ensure strict compliance with the league’s regulations to avoid further disciplinary action that could affect its position on the league table.

With the possibility of a three-point and three-goal deduction hanging over the club, any repeat of the offence could have significant sporting consequences for the Pride of Rivers.

The NPFL’s latest decision reinforces its position that clubs must work within established regulations as the league continues efforts to strengthen its organisation, commercial appeal and international visibility.
