2026 FIFA WORLD CUP: Algeria Files Formal Complaint to FIFA Over Controversial Decisions in Argentina Defeat

The Algerian Football Federation has officially lodged a complaint with FIFA following a series of contentious refereeing decisions in their World Cup clash against Argentina national football team.

Algeria were beaten 3–0 in the Group J encounter, but the North African federation has moved swiftly to challenge what it describes as “decisive officiating errors” that may have influenced the outcome of the match.

At the center of the protest are two specific incidents involving Argentina players. The first concerns a challenge by Lionel Messi on defender Aïssa Mandi, which Algeria argues warranted stronger disciplinary action. According to the complaint, the contact was dangerous and should have resulted in at least a booking, if not a more severe sanction.

The second flashpoint involves Alexis Mac Allister, who is accused of striking Algeria’s Maza with an elbow during an off-the-ball moment. The Algerian camp insists the incident was overlooked by both the referee and VAR officials, further fueling frustration within the delegation.

In a statement, the federation emphasized its commitment to protecting the integrity of the competition, calling on FIFA to conduct a thorough review of the officiating team’s performance. While stopping short of demanding a replay, the complaint seeks “clarity, accountability, and corrective measures” to prevent similar situations in future matches.

The controversy adds tension to an already competitive Group J, where Algeria must now regroup quickly ahead of their next fixture. Meanwhile, Argentina, buoyed by their opening victory, are preparing for their upcoming match against Austria with momentum on their side.

FIFA has yet to issue an official response, but the governing body is expected to review the incidents as part of its standard post-match assessment procedures.
