Côte d’Ivoire’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has come to an end after a hard-fought 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 32.
The Ivorians produced a spirited display but were unable to stop the Norwegian side, who secured a place in the Round of 16 with a late winner.
Norway took the lead in the 39th minute through Antonio Nusa before Côte d’Ivoire fought back in the second half, with Diallo drawing the African side level in the 74th minute.
Just as extra time appeared likely, Norway struck the decisive blow in the 86th minute when star striker Erling Haaland converted from close range to seal a dramatic 2-1 victory and send his country into the next round.
Despite the disappointment, Côte d’Ivoire leaves the tournament with pride after reaching the knockout stage and delivering several impressive performances.
Their exit also reduces Africa’s representation in the competition as the race for World Cup glory intensifies.
Norway will now turn its attention to a Round of 16 showdown against Brazil as it continues its quest for a deep run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
