Zambia Super League champions Power Dynamos suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to ZESCO United FC in a closely contested and fiercely fought encounter at Arthur Davies Stadium on Friday.
The highly anticipated encounter got off to an intense start, with both sides showing attacking intent and battling for control of the midfield. Power Dynamos, backed by the home support, looked to impose themselves early, while ZESCO United remained dangerous on the counter as the two sides traded attacks.
ZESCO came closest to breaking the deadlock in the opening stages when Luka Mutoshi tested Power Dynamos goalkeeper Willard Mwanza with a long-range effort in the 12th minute. Mwanza was equal to the effort, keeping the scores level as both teams continued to create half-chances.
The game took a dramatic turn in the 32nd minute when both sides were reduced to 10 men. Power Dynamos’ Amine Hiver and ZESCO United’s Kabaso Chongo were shown straight red cards following an altercation, forcing both teams to adjust tactically for the remainder of the match.
With the numerical balance restored, the second half remained tightly contested, with neither side able to establish clear dominance. Power Dynamos continued to show resilience and created opportunities, while ZESCO remained patient in their search for an opening.
As the match entered its final stages, the intensity increased, with both teams pushing forward in search of the decisive breakthrough. Power Dynamos appeared to have done enough to hold on for a point, but ZESCO United found a way through late in the game.
Substitute Kennedy Musonda broke the deadlock in the 85th minute, firing home the decisive goal to hand ZESCO United a 1-0 lead and put Power Dynamos under pressure in the closing stages.
Aba Yellow responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser, but ZESCO’s defence held firm to secure all three points on day two of the 4-Team Tournament.
Coach Mutapa highlighted – “we are disappointed with the result because the boys gave a good account of themselves and competed well throughout the match. I was pleased with the way we moved the ball and with the decisions the players made on the pitch. Although it was a friendly match, we came here with the mentality to win. Unfortunately, we conceded late, but there were still positives to take from the performance.”
Power Dynamos will look to bounce back when they face Congolese side AS Simba on Saturday at 15:00hrs at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
