UEFA plans major format change for Euro qualifiers

Euro qualifiers could undergo a significant transformation as UEFA studies new formats ahead of upcoming competitions. Euro qualifiers are now at the center of discussions as European teams prepare for the 2027 Nations League and Euro 2028, two competitions that remain closely linked in the qualification pathway.

According to The Guardian, a decision could be made during an Executive Committee meeting in Istanbul before the end of May, just ahead of the Europa League final.

Several options are currently on the table to modernize the system and respond to ongoing criticism. One proposal involves adopting a Swiss-style format similar to the UEFA Champions League, featuring a single overall standings table.

In the middle of these reflections, Euro qualifiers could also shift toward a structure inspired by the Women’s World Cup system, dividing nations into three leagues based on their Nations League performances. However, such a model may favor top-tier nations and widen the gap with smaller teams, raising concerns about competitive balance.
